Mental Health & Wellness Support
Our Approach
At the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield, we are deeply committed to the mental health and wellness of our youth. We recognize the importance of addressing the emotional and psychological needs of our members, and we strive to create a supportive and nurturing environment for all children. Our approach to mental health and wellness is comprehensive, inclusive, and designed to meet the diverse needs of our youth, including those with neurodivergencies.
Our Commitment
Our commitment to mental health and wellness is reflected in our wide range of programs and services that aim to promote emotional well-being, teach coping skills, and provide individualized learning plans. We understand that every child is unique, and we work diligently to tailor our support to meet their specific needs. We adhere to the safety measures mandated by the New Jersey DCF Office of Licensing and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America membership requirements, ensuring we do everything we can within these guidelines.

Creation of useful summaries of your child’s IEP or 504 Plan to assist Club staff in providing the best support possible. Available at all sites.
External Referrals
While we cannot guarantee the provision of external support, we can provide referrals for services such as therapy through New Jersey’s Children’s System of Care, or other services as needed. Available at all sites.
Parental Consultation
Consulting with parents to provide assistance in managing their child’s behavior and offering resources as needed. Available at all sites.
What We Cannot Offer
Intensive Therapy or Counseling Services
While we offer basic support and referrals, we do not provide intensive therapy or ongoing counseling services, nor can we guarantee their provision from external agencies.
One-on-One Supervision
We are unable to offer one-on-one supervision for children with high needs. Our programs are designed for group settings.
Medical Interventions
We do not provide medical mental health interventions, including administering medication, beyond basic first aid.
Specialized Programs for Severe Neurodivergence
Our staff is trained to support a range of needs, but we do not have specialized programs for severe neurodivergence. We recommend seeking specialized services, programs, and facilities for children requiring intensive support.
Support for Youth with Tendency to Wander or Elope
Due to legal restrictions, we are unable to restrain children and therefore cannot safely support youth who have a tendency to wander or elope. We encourage families needing this level of support to seek specialized programs that can ensure their child’s safety.
